French authorities will start intercepting migrant vessels in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin intercepting migrant vessels in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and stating there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to official statements.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson says personnel will start taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible method to disable the engines of the boats.
The decision to take action at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the former government official left office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when French police were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Now French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adjust to evade interception, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
